about

originally made available as doombient.zero some years ago, the music featured here was recorded live in concert when ['ramp] were playing their first major show abroad.

eric snelders, head of quantum records and organizer of the annual alfa centauri festival in the netherlands, had invited ['ramp] to perform at the sixth incarnation of the festival at huizen's theater 3-in-1 on 11th april 1999.

this place doesn't exist anymore as it burnt down in september 2005.

unfortunately, ['ramp] were to open the festival which proved to be a bit too hard to swallow for many people attending -- they were prepared to witness something along the lines of ramp's debut album "nodular" and what they got was... well, give it a listen yourself. it was a little different indeed.

other than eliminating some lengthy bits, the music here is exactly what was played in concert. the closing section of the concert has been altered, though: many people have fond memories of the main sequencer rig crashing halfway through the concert and the furious but slightly over-the-top finale (hence the album title).

the original finale was included as a bonus track and replaced with a bit that was recorded in the studio during the final rehearsal before the show (and which goes down slightly better).

when sifting through heaps of dat tapes, i came across a broken tape that had apparently been recorded during the rehearsals prior to the show.

i edited the recordings slightly, just to find out how strongly based on textural sound these rehearsals were -- many people believed the extensive ambient sections throughout the live concert to be due to the main sequencer rig crashing but this wasn't exactly true. as a matter of fact, the entire concert had been very ambient, in a steve roach kind of way, from the outset. it is also amazing to hear how close the actual concert was -- at least structurally -- to the second rehearsal, recorded one week before the huizen performance, lacking only the adrenaline playing a part in a live situation. some sections are, in fact, remarkably close to what ['ramp] would play at jodrell bank two years later.

i am happy to have retrieved these little moments of spontaneous inspiration. enjoy.
