about

as a continuation of "the putney", "sperrgebiete" ("restricted areas") was recorded and produced during the second corona lockdown that was limited to the area in germany i live in -- gütersloh in eastern-westphalia. the previous four months had already been an ordeal -- it was (and still is) like a bad dystopian film, playing on the wrong side of the screen. too much doombience, even for my personal preference, i must admit. for some time, i was tempted to call the album "welcome to my nightmare" but that would have been a tad too much alice cooper-ish, right?

the title of this recording nods at the 1985 album "seuchengebiete" by my valued fellow colleague asmus tietchens. like "the putney", "sperrgebiete" is a rather unsettling affair, full of abstract ambient drones, self-generative patches, and processed sound, created entirely on a mk. 1 vcs-3 synthesiser. again, i decided to use analogue processing gear exclusively, i. e. spring reverbs, tape delays, and tape loops. the only external effects used this time were a morley flanger pedal as well as the trusty old compact phasing a, and the electro-harmonix 16-second digital delay, too (of course). again, "sperrgebiete" was recorded on analogue tape recorders and mastered to analogue tape (this time mainly agfa pem 468 with dbx) before it was edited and assembled digitally in protools.

i'd recommend listening to it through headphones.

happy listening.
